Maria Cantwell
Maria Cantwell (Democrat) represented the 44th Legislative District, which included Mountlake Terrace, Bothell, Brier and Mill Creek. She
served in the House of Representatives from 1987 to 1993.
She then served in Congress as the 1st Congressional Representative from 1993-1995
after being elected for a two-year term.
Cantwell was elected U.S. Senator (D-Washington) in 2000, and re-elected in 2006 and 2012 for
six-year terms.
She was one of the first women to defeat an elected incumbent senator in a general election when she defeated Senator Slade Gorton in 2000.
A graduate of Miami University she operated her own public relations firm. In addition, she served on the Snohomish County Board of Displaced
Homemakers and was active in Women's issues.
